Emily Rose Wright

“Wright blends moments of figuration into layers of abstraction, her dense surfaces offering fleeting glimpses into the history of both the paintings and the artist.”

Introduce yourself, list three things we need to know about you or your practice.

My name is Emily Rose Wright. I was born in Seattle, Washington on March 30, 1999 around 4:00 PM. I grew up in Falmouth, Massachusetts. I went to Falmouth High School and then I went to the Rhode Island School of Design to study painting.

What’s your creative process?

What factors have influenced your creation?

Presently, I try to absorb everything like a sponge. When I was a bit younger I was much more curatorial about my influences, and by that I mean I would have answered this question solely with references far outside of dominant culture. I tried to deny the existence of Bitmojis, sports bars, Brandy Melville, and reality TV, influences that are often subconscious or non consensual. Now I try to be honest with myself about the fact that my eyes take these stimuli in. I grew up in haunted New England woods but I also watched Ren and Stimpy and hung out at the mall.

The last two movies I watched were a 1998 public access documentary about a teenage vampire cult in Kentucky, and Click with Adam Sandler. The last two games I played were Silent Hill 2 and Rumble Roses. Two painters I've been moved by recently are Ljiljana Blaževska and Masanori Tomita. My ultimate influence, though, has always been my family.

How does your medium govern your artistic practice?

I don’t; it has all pooled together, which makes everything messy, both physically and spiritually. But I like it very much.

What’s been on your mind lately?

How’s life outside of studio?

Vast.

Plans for the future?

Translate the numbers of each clock to the system of an unidentifiable kingdom.

And finally, how do you like your eggs?
