“I’m from Oklahoma I ain’t got no one to call my own. If you will be my honey, I will be your sugar pie way hi ya way ya hi ya way ya hi yo”
Diane Burns (1957-2006)
Introduce yourself, list three things we need to know about you or your practice.
My name is Naomi Hawksley. I’m from San Francisco but am now based in New York. My practice is based in drawing and sculpture.
What’s your creative process?
I try my best to be thoughtful with my time while waiting for an idea… watching movies and seeing live shows. After a while, there will be a flash of a composition and I start a drawing based loosely on that. The result is a practice that is rooted in collected imagery and psychology, among other things.
What factors have influenced your creation?
One of my favorite movies is Breaking the Waves. I also think that maintaining a sense of safety in my studio and practice more broadly determines a lot.

How does your medium govern your artistic practice?
Pencil on paper pushes honesty and patience. I think it requires belief in the image. The introduction of sculpture is loose and anti-gravitational.
How do you see the relationship between life and work?
I try my best to be doing some kind of production for the whole day; drawing or glueing or arranging. I like starting late, working from maybe 2pm until midnight. I don’t like to consider research part of studio time since all that’s learned is also accessed in most other areas of my life.
What’s been on your mind lately?
Systems for living and morality, scheduling, relativity.
How’s life outside of studio?
I’m in a constant state of delirium.
Share one favorite item of yours.
A silver, mini utility knife keychain.
Plans for the future?
Something soon with 4649 in Tokyo, and a residency this summer at Virreina.
And finally, how do you like your eggs?
Soft boiled and marinated.
